At least we are safe
from the Big Bang, billions of years ago
where light tore itself from nothing
Even when you and I were miles apart
across unmeasured distances
a fragment of you still wandered toward mine
in our umpteenth life
I wait for your touch, longingly
The galaxies revere your name
and for your smile, I would collapse—
oh, your smile, so fleeting.
At least we are safe
from the deadly yearning
of an old, dying star
Never let us drift too far—
come closer to me at dusk,
as I grow brittle.
But at least we are safe
from a falling meteor
that could destroy us
and time freezes for a little longer
Yet your voice bends space around me,
keeping me warm against the indifferent dark.
At least—before everything unravels into the void—
we are still, somehow, each other’s shelter.
